what it does

The Safe Stop™ Headwall Barrier is specifically designed to gradually decelerate, contain and redirect vehicles to a safe stop.

Advantages:

The Safe Stop™ Headwall Barrier can be installed in virtually any location where roadside hazards exist. The Headwall Barrier utilizes a unique and efficient energy absorbing and dissipating mechanism. Composed of innovative materials and designed without dangerous openings or protruding sharp components, the Headwall Barrier will set the standard for safety by gradually decelerating vehicles of all sizes and drastically reducing the potential of occupant injury, especially for motorcyclists and occupants in small cars.

Applications:

The Headwall Barrier can be made in various sizes (height, width, length) and profile shapes to be installed in front of almost any object:

  • Existing guardrails and end terminals
  • Bridge columns/piers
  • End abutments
  • Light poles
  • Other potential roadside hazards (walls, signs, posts, trees, etc.)

Reflectors or other reflective material can be easily incorporated into the design for increased visibility for motorists.

An alternative version of the Headwall Barrier can easily integrate with portable barriers to achieve the same functionality as the standalone version, but fewer components are required for installation. This version of the Headwall Barrier is ideal for work zones and other temporary applications. 

This temporary version of the Headwall Barrier integrates with the portable barrier to form our unique energy dissipating mechanism. Furthermore, the portable barrier acts as the anchorage system for the Headwall Barrier. This temporary version is able to be installed very quickly and efficiently as work zone construction teams or other personnel are in need of immediate protection.

The Safe Stop Headwall Barrier is expected to be the first crash cushion that will be strong enough to safely stop an 80,000 lb. tractor trailer while also capable of protecting occupants in smaller vehicles.

Maintenance**

Today’s crash cushions are known to have higher replacement costs compared to the expected cost of our Headwall Barrier. We designed the Safe Stop™ Headwall Barrier to be reusable and recoverable after impacts to extend the lifespan of the barrier. 

For light to moderate impacts, the Headwall Barrier should require minimal to no maintenance before being operational again since it is designed to naturally recover. This reduces or eliminates maintenance time and replacement costs.

If the Headwall Barrier is damaged from a more significant impact, some components can be reused depending on the severity of the collision. If no components can be re-utilized, a new Headwall Barrier is able to be installed very quickly and efficiently.

*Extensive non-accredited full-scale crash testing of Safe Stop Headwall Barrier prototypes have been performed to replicate MASH testing conditions and optimize the design of this device. Accredited crash testing will be performed to assess compliance of the Headwall Barrier under MASH TL-3 criteria. Testing will also be performed using the MASH 36000V vehicle (80,000 lb Tractor-Van Trailer) to assess the Headwall Barrier’s ability to safely contain and redirect larger vehicles.
