About Safe STop Barrier Systems

Our History

The founders of Safe Stop™ Barrier Systems, Jim and Mary Motz, became passionate about road safety after seeing numerous devastating wrecks on the highway. The motorcycle accidents and tractor trailer accidents, especially, were most horrible and often fatal when they involved collisions with various types of roadside or median barriers.

Jim and Mary decided they had to do something to change this. They wanted to come up with alternative and safer solutions to protect people. They spent countless hours researching roadside safety statistics and brainstorming solutions.

Their passion became a reality when they met Sana Moran, an experienced and talented transportation researcher who had spent the last decade analyzing roadside safety and infrastructure protection devices.

Together, Jim, Mary and Sana developed innovative, breakthrough designs for roadside safety barriers. They then spent months developing prototypes and molds, and testing their designs with a staff of experienced fabricators at their facility in Columbus, TX.

The result is Safe Stop™ Barrier Systems, a portfolio of roadside safety longitudinal roadside and median barriers, crash cushions, and portable barriers that are designed to improve safety and reduce serious harm or fatalities.

JIM MOTZ

CEO AND INVENTOR

Jim is a lifelong inventor and problem-solver. By age 30, Jim created a sod production business in which he produced and installed sod and contracted seeding and landscaping services. He also invented a retaining wall system and one of the most highly-demanded products for erosion control from flowing runoff water, Flexamat,®a world-known vegetated concrete block mat for stabilizing slopes, channels, low water crossings, inlet/outlet protection and shorelines. His idea for Flexamat® came about on his own family farm as a way to control water and erosion problems and is now a globally-sold and celebrated product for solving erosion control issues that typically plague roadways, landfills, shorelines, airport runways, streams, riverbanks and more. Now Jim is tackling roadside safety, which takes 1.3 million lives per year and injures 20-25 million people, many of whom end up with long-term disabilities. His new design approach for Safe Stop Barrier Systems products focuses on simplicity of installation, improving what is currently in use and above all else, promoting the well-being of society with the safest barrier systems imaginable. “Always strive to improve yourself and never stop learning.”

MARY MOTZ

PRESIDENT

Mary comes from an educational background and was a high school teacher for 30 years. As a teacher, the hardest thing she had to do was attend the funeral of a student killed in a car accident. These tragedies had a lasting impact on her life and became her motivation for wanting safer roadways – for students, parents, teachers, brothers, sisters and others impacted by serious and fatal road accidents. Mary serves as the President and Business Manager of Safe Stop Barriers, and uses her education, diverse perspectives and business acumen to run the day-to-day operations. She is also excellent at brainstorming ideas that, when combined with the team’s engineering expertise, result in Safe Stop products that are ideal for enhancing and improving highway safety.

FACILITIES

Safe Stop™ operates a 20,000 sq. ft. manufacturing and fabrication facility in Columbus, TX, about an hour from Houston. The 20 acre property allows for ample storage of the various materials and supplies used in manufacturing, as well as provides ample space to conduct preliminary testing on site to replicate MASH tests required for each product. Utilizing a test track built on the Safe Stop facility, roughly thirty (30) non-accredited full-scale crash tests have been performed using vehicles ranging in size from small cars to large tractor-trailer trucks. Throughout the testing process, designs were altered, tested, and then retested until final prototypes were developed.

Safe stop™ mission

To develop and implement roadside safety and infrastructure protection barrier products that raise the standards for safety barriers and promote the well-being of society.  We strive to implement the most innovative concepts to our designs that enable us to create cost-effective and resilient barrier products with the highest integrity.
